What Is Underpainting?

Also dubbed the ‘backwards beauty’ trend, the viral hack involves applying contour and highlight, blush and bronzer underneath your foundation to create a seamlessly sculpted effect.

TikTok was sent into a frenzy when make-up artist Mary Phillips unveiled her underpainting method, with thousands of users taking to the platform to trial the technique. With Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber among its supposed devotees, we figured it’s about time we figured out how best to achieve the look.

Studio10: HOW TO GET THE LOOK

STEP 1: CONTOUR

Start by sculpting out your features with the Radiance Glow Bronzing Veil (£28) from Studio10 Beauty. Apply to the shadows of your face: cheekbones, jaw line and the edge of the forehead to define before blending out with the tapered end of the Double Ended Vegan Cheek Brush (£28).

STEP 2: HIGHLIGHT

Use the 4-in-1 Skin Perfector Palette (£32) to brighten under eyes and accentuate high points. Using the Double Ended Vegan Concealer Brush (£26), apply the cream concealer to the tops of cheekbones, centre of the forehead and tip of the nose and chin.

STEP 3: BLUSH

Use a cream blush to add a flawless flush of colour. Stipple the Plumping Blush Glow-Plexion (£26) onto the apples of cheeks before blending out with the domed end of the Double Ended Vegan Cheek Brush (£28).

STEP 4: FOUNDATION

After applying contour, highlight and blush, use the Skin Repair Perfect Canvas Foundation (£34) to blend over the top, buffing in the colour for a seamless finish.
