Why you need to be applying a digital age defence this winter

When the seasons change and it gets colder, it’s a good idea to switch up your skincare routine. You might swap to a richer moisturiser, opt for a hydrating mask or slap on the lip balm. But when the sun disappears, many people put their sunscreen away, and this is a skincare mistake you can’t afford to make.

Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate clouds

Just because it’s a cold, cloudy day doesn’t mean you won’t be exposed to the strong UVA rays that cause ageing and potential skin cancer. But it’s also about protecting against the UV form blue light that we are exposed to inside our homes. For example, from our computer screens and other devices.

Experts agree that applying sunscreen in the winter is a vital step to keep skin healthy

Skin therapist & Training Expert, Lindsay Tallant says,  “Using an SPF30 is just as important in the winter as in the summer time. UV rays are still present and can penetrate through clouds, glass and clothes, which means that even if you are inside or it is a cloudy rainy day, you still need to protect your skin. UVA can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and cause premature ageing…You don’t need to be in direct sunlight for damage to be caused to the skin. Infrared has also been found to be more damaging than UV and sunscreens do not typically block this light.”

Digital Age Defence

Blue light, also called high-energy visible light (HEV), penetrates deeper into the skin than UVA and UVB light. It also has a higher level of energy than IR light which means there is a greater potential for skin damage to occur.

The need for protection from blue light has arisen in recent years given that the source of blue light is not only the sun. Digital screens from smartphones, computers and televisions emit a high amount of blue light wavelengths. This becomes a bigger concern as we spend more time indoors during the winter months. It negatively affects the skin by generating ROS (reactive oxygen species) which cause oxidative damage and contribute to photo-ageing. Additionally, it has been shown that blue light irradiation delays skin barrier recovery.

“As we are spending more time indoors, we also need to protect our skin from the damaging effects of Blue light which is emitted not just from the sun but also our modern technology, such as televisions, smart phones and computers. Blue light also interrupts our melatonin which is the hormone that regulates our sleep/wake cycle. This means using a smart device just before bedtime can create changes in our sleep patterns and result in a poorer quality sleep.” says Tallant.
